11.2 Obje ct hierarchy

The following subsection gives a precise definition for the organization of the hierarchy that we introduced before.

The object hierarchy follows primarily the style introduced at configuration time. However, according to the settings in the Settings=>Customization menu, the basic site-equipment-measurement hierarchy can be mixed with virtual sites, equipments and different charts. It makes a significant difference in the display also whether the user has access privileges to the ROOT site or not (the next example assumes that both the private and the public virtual hierarchies are authorized):

  • Has access to the ROOT site: on the first level the basic and virtual sites under ROOT site as well as the virtual equipments are displayed. When navigating down in the basic site hierarchy, always the basic and virtual sites and the basic and virtual equipment under the given level are found. When navigating down in the virtual site hierarchy, only the virtual sites and equipments under the given level and the linked real equipments can be seen.
  • Has no access to the ROOT site: on the first level those basic sites and equipments can be found, whose parent object the user has no privileges to access, supplemented with the own virtual sites and equipment defined for the first level. By navigating down in the basic site hierarchy, always the basic and virtual sites and basic equipment below the given level can be found. In this case, only those virtual pieces of equipment appear, for which the user has privileges to access all of its charts. By navigating down in the virtual site hierarchy, the virtual sites under the given level always appear; the virtual pieces of equipment and linked-in real equipment can only be seen, if the user has access to them.

In contrast to the configuration view, there is another difference in the display of measurement results: measurements made by Jaga, and CiscoRPING collector servers are also linked into the measurements of the appropriate equipment identified by name, consequently, users with visibility rights to the equipment can automatically view these measurements as well. The precondition of this linking is that the name of measurement under the agent must either be the same as the name of the equipment, or should start with that and followed by a space.
